Description of Possible Author/Student Activities
Here are examples of some
popular programs. If your school has other, specific
requirements, contact
me to tailor a program to suit your needs.
Writers’ Workshop
– Author teaches students about the elements of writing a
story by using her own writing as an example. During
discussion, the students will brainstorm with the author to
write a story. The importance of editing will be taught by
looking at multiple, original rough copies for The Day
Marcus Flew, and other stories. Even real authors must
edit and revise! If taught in classroom, students will then
begin writing their own stories using the techniques taught
by the author. This lesson is aligned with the Ohio State
Standards for Writing. (Author has BA/MA in elementary
education and 23 years teaching experience grades 1 – 8)
Grade Level: 1 – 6,
Workshop maximum: 30 or whole group: 150
Time: 20 minutes grades 1
– 3, 40 minutes grades 4 – 6, power point
Story Time
– author will read parts of The Day Marcus Flew
answering questions about the publishing process and brief
discussion about an author’s contract. She will then read a
newly written sequel which has not completed the publishing
process yet.
Grade Level: K – 3, Story
Time maximum: 150
Time: 20 – 30 minutes
(depending on amount of student questions)
Whole Group Seminar
– author combines Writers’ Workshop, story time, question
and answer time into 45 minute seminars.
Grade Level: 1 – 6,
Maximum: 200 (flexible)
Staff
– I would love to have a
chance to chat with each of you (maybe over coffee, donuts
or fruit!) Some schools have a “meet the author” time for
staff before the students arrive at school. This is totally
up to you, but I wanted you to know I am available.
Included with all
visits: Lunch
with the Author /Autographing / Book Signing. Students have
their books personally autographed to them, creating a
keepsake and souvenir of the author event.

“Wow! What a wonderful, rich presentation we were treated
to...your passion and playfulness with words and stories
were contagious. I can’t imagine a more dynamic celebration
of writing than the time we spent with you.”
Sharon Severt - 4th grade teacher, Brookville

Dianna Brisco’s passion for books and teaching shines through
her presentation. She explains the publishing process
clearly and concisely.
Joan Gagan - Children’s Librarian Montgomery County Public
Library, Ohio
Thank
you for doing such a marvelous job with our students.
It really helps for students to actually see, step by
step, how the writing process works. My class really
liked the pictures and stories that you told.
Julia
Shaw – Third Grade Teacher Albany Elementary,
Delaware
County Schools ,
Indiana
The children and staff alike enjoyed you being here. The
children are still talking about your visit and I've already
employed some of your ideas in my classroom. I look forward
to your next book(s).
